Torre del Paine Information

Torres del Paine National Park is located in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region, Última Esperanza Province, Torres del Paine Commune. It was created by Decree 383 of the Ministry of Agriculture on May 13, 1959.

It is world-renowned for the massifs that give it its name, granite giants sculpted by the force of glacial ice.

In 1978, it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB).

Its main attraction is the Paine mountain range, an independent mountain system separate from the Patagonian Andes, composed of sedimentary rock at its highest points and granite at its base. Its imposing formations were shaped by the advance and retreat of glaciers more than twelve million years ago.

The park is home to unique sub-Antarctic flora and wildlife. Its biodiversity attracts scientists and researchers from around the world, who study its seventeen ecosystems.

The spectacular and varied landscape makes Torres del Paine National Park the main regional tourist attraction and one of the most outstanding in the country and the world. A wide range of ecotourism activities can be enjoyed there, including camping, hiking, mountaineering, boating, river rafting, glacier treks, horseback riding, and documentary filming.
